Unscheduled Extra Octannual Manual
In conversation with Jeremy Deller next Monday
Hello all - forgive the unscheduled extra email, but the folks at White Rabbit are putting together a very special event for next Monday - October 17th - which I wanted to alert you to. It’s a delayed launch party for my book. This is the graphic, but it doesn’t mention the best bit.
The best bit is that I will be in conversation with the Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller. Jeremy is probably best known for his 1,000 person miner’s strike re-enactment The Battle of Orgreave. You might also know his bouncy Stonehenge or films like Everything In The Place, in which he explained Acid House to a class of modern school kids. He’s also done stuff like this:
I’m very excited by this as you can probably tell. It has all the hallmarks of one of those one-off, you-had-to-be-there evenings - or at least it will, if you can make it.
If this wasn’t enough, the night will also include my favourite comedian Andrew O’Neill - you might recall me recommending their Radio 4 series Damned Andrew earlier in the year. Justin Robertson will be DJing, Luke Turner from the Quietus will be announcing his next book and also… God knows, really, we’ll see what presents itself this week. The last-minute-energy is strong with this one.
For those who can’t make it I’m also doing a talk and signing this Thursday 13th October at Real Magic Books, the brand new independent book shop that has just opened in Wendover, and there’s a few more events coming up including Falmouth and Sheffield. Details of all these are on my events page.
Here’s a wonderful thing I want to leave you with. I was in Liverpool last week and I met the artist Ange McCormick, who is part way through a year-long work she calls Eleanor’s Shoes. Everyday she takes a different pair of women’s shoes to the Eleanor Rigby statue, and in doing so manages to turn a tragic archetype into a fully rounded human. I thought it was just wonderful and hope you agree.
Quite how this work is going to develop or be documented I don’t know, but keep an eye out for it!
